2 States: A Review
First things first- I will give 2 States a ‘Thumbs up’. Probably 3.5 out of 5. That’s what you were looking for, yep! Now I can move further with it, ok.
I haven’t read 2 States but the title in itself is pretty revealing and after watching the promos and posters it was pretty obvious that it’s a love story where two families involved are from two distinct cultures – Punjabis & Tamils. North-South Divide you know.
The story starts with Arjun Kapoor being portrayed as a patient who is visiting a psychiatrist for suicidal tendencies and he is narrating his story to his psychiatric Doctor for obvious reasons.
Now it starts. Alia Bhatt has again donned that girl next door image who is cool, nonchalant and carefree types. While Arjun Kapoor is nerdy, geeky looking guy with an ambition to earn lots of money and pursue his passion of ‘Writing’ afterwards.
First phase of the story starts with how they meet and fall in love at IIM Ahemdabad, their college. But at convocation Arjun’s mother Amrita Singh meets Alia’s family. Off course both don’t like each other.
Arjun takes up his placement at Alia’s hometown in Chennai where he tries to convince her parents that he is the best suitor. He succeeds. But now it’s the turn of Alia to convince Arjun’s family- Amrita Singh & her Husband Ronit Roy.
After interval it has been portrayed that Arjun doesn’t enjoy good relations with his father nor her mother Amrita. The portrayal of their relationship is indeed the best part of the movie according to me. Arjun is mamma’s boy.
Amrita Singh has enacted typical Punjabi woman that sometimes invoke laughter for her theatrics & Punjabi nature in some scenes. She & her maternal family are against ‘Madrasi’s’ and castigates Alia for casting a spell on his son. She wants a Punjabi girl who will bring a good dose of dowry & expensive other gifts for her.
Without much to reveal I leave the story here. Go & watch it. It’s a fascinating story about two cultures, their intricacies, their mind-set & how they stumble into each other for their children. Find it out yourself.
My take:
Alia is as good as always.
Arjun Kapoor has also pulled this off too.
Amrita Singh & Ronit Roy- both have done justice to their famed image.
The Director
The director looks to have done justice with the movie and both young actor & actress suits perfectly to the demand of the story.
It’s a definitely a onetime watch. You won’t mind watching it second time around either.
Music
Music is ok types not something that will make you dance in the theatre ;)
Story
The director doesn’t loose the plot rather story goes along with easy pace where you don’t find it boring.
Thanks for the reading. Enjoy the movie & share your experience once you watch it.
